Hida-Takayama Miyagawa Morning Market is one of Takayama’s most enjoyable local experiences, held each morning along the Miyagawa River in the old town area. It’s not a large market, but it has a lovely sense of place, with small stalls selling seasonal produce, pickles, flowers, handmade crafts, miso, sweets and local snacks.

The market has been part of Takayama life for generations and still feels closely connected to the surrounding Hida countryside. Local farmers and producers set up beside the river, and the atmosphere is relaxed rather than hectic. It’s a good place to see everyday Takayama, especially early in the morning before the main sightseeing streets become busy.

Food is a big part of the appeal. Look out for mitarashi dango, skewered rice dumplings brushed with soy sauce and grilled until lightly charred, as well as local pickles, rice crackers and seasonal fruit. You may also find small bites using Hida beef, one of the region’s best-known specialities.

The market runs close to Sanmachi Suji, Takayama’s beautifully preserved merchant district, so it’s easy to combine the two. A good plan is to visit the market first, then wander into the old streets while they’re still relatively quiet. Mornings are best, as some stalls begin packing up by late morning, particularly in quieter seasons or poor weather.
