Tenryuji Temple is an important temple in Kyoto's Arashiyama district, and is registered as a world heritage site. It was built in 1339 by the ruling military dictator Ashikaga Takauji, and was dedicated to Emperor Go-Daigo, who had passed away. The two were allies until Takauji went against the emperor in a struggle for supremacy over Japan. He then built the temple in attempts to appease the former emperor's spirits.
