The Heian Shrine was founded 1895 and has a relatively short history. It was built on the 1100th anniversary of the capital's foundation in Kyoto and was dedicated to the spirits of the first and last emperors who reigned from the city. The shrine's grounds are spacious, and feature a wide open court in the middle. Its main buildings are somewhat of a duplicate of the original Imperial Palace from the Heian Period, but built on a smaller scale.
