Set at the Attica peninsula’s southernmost tip, roughly 60 kilometres from Athens, Cape Sounion, or simply Sounion is home to a famous ancient site, namely the grand Temple of Poseidon. Watching out over the sea on a high promontory, this stately structure is believed to have had its first version created around the eighth century BC. The monument was also mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey and has several ties to Greek mythology. The area’s jaw-dropping landscapes, characterised by rugged cliffs, a gorgeous little beach beneath the monument, and famously beautiful sunsets, make this a prime location for photography, hiking, swimming and sunbathing. There are two more delightful beaches nearby - Legrena or Lavrio - and several trails and guided tours on offer of the wider area.
