Soaring at 2708 metres above sea level, Poas Volcano is one of Central Valley's most spectacular attractions that rests within the bounds of Poas Volcano National Park. It offers awe-inspiring views of its massive crater - 1050 feet deep and almost a mile across - one of the largest craters in the world. Here, visitors will encounter the peculiar sights and smells of an active volcano, from its sulfuric lake to the fumaroles, which are constantly bubbling with steam. Nature lovers will marvel at the abundance of wildlife along the Botos Lagoon trail to Lake Botos, with hummingbirds, tanagers, flycatchers, toucanets, Costa Rica's national bird, the clay-coloured thrush and even the majestic quetzal being found here. The 1km Escalonia cloud forest trail is an excellent route to see all the birds living in the park and two of the endemic species—Poás squirrels and escalonia trees.
