Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungthang Dewa Chhenbi Phodrang, is the administrative centre of Punakha District in Bhutan. It was constructed in 1637–38 by Ngawang Namgyal. The dzong houses sacred relics of the Drukpa Kagyu tradition, including the Rangjung Kharsapani. It served as Bhutan’s governmental seat until 1955 and has hosted royal coronations since 1907, while also functioning as a winter residence for the central monastic body, located between Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.
