Also known as Fronteras, the town of Rio Dulce is set along the headwaters of the spectacular Rio Dulce. It once served as the last outpost before venturing into El Peten, a remote region in the north of Guatemala. Rio Dulce is set on the banks of the Dulce River which is lined with lush, dense tropical jungle interrupted by several tributaries branching off to the side and dotted with eco-lodges. The town serves as a popular stopover for tourists on a boat tour to or from Livingstone as well as ‘yachties’ who seek shelter from the open seas and want to stock up on supplies. Visitors can explore the Caribbean Lowlands and discover the dramatic cliffs of La Cueva de la Vaca, soak in the warm sulfurous waters near Río Lampara’s and visit the ancient Castillo de San Felipe.
