AmaKhosi Safari Lodge is set in the 12,000ha AmaZulu Private Game Reserve in northern KwaZulu Natal, and offers Big 5 game viewing, bush walks with experienced game rangers, excellent birding and even frogging safaris. AmaKhosi's direct translation from Zulu is "the Place of Kings" and this is an apt description for this intimate and exclusive private safari lodge. The attentive and experienced management couple with their well-trained staff really do make you feel special. A big feature of AmaKhosi Safari Lodge is the extensive river frontage overlooking the Mkuze river.
The thatched accommodation is particularly spacious: the six air-conditioned River Suites are well spaced and offer great seclusion and comfort with ceiling-high windows and an expansive river deck. There's a bedroom, separate sitting room, bathroom, separate shower room and loo. The suites at AmaKhosi Safari Lodge are decorated in colourful African fabrics but it is the glass walls onto the bush, and the decadent bathrooms, with a bath for two surounded by candles which attracted me. The sitting room can be converted into a children's bedroom. The two Umntwana suites are perfect for honeymooners with an open plan design, glass walls, spacious deck with private Jacuzzi, bedroom and sitting room.
The IsiGodlo Private Villa is perfect for families or friends. Two en suite bedrooms, spacious lounge with large leather sofas and fireplace all open onto the deck with sweeping views of the valley and wildlife below. The plunge pool is perfect for the warm KwaZulu days.
The main lodge at AmaKhosi Safari Lodge is equally expansive, with two sitting areas, bar, indoor dining area, covered terrace for evening dining and an expansive deck for breakfast and lunch with open views over the Mkuze River.
Amakhosi lies within Amakhosi private game reserve which lies within the larger AmaZulu game reserve, over 12,000ha in size and offersing the Big Five - elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo. The several different co-systems of the reserve - mountain grasslands, wetlands and valley bushveld - leads to a diversity of animals including giraffe, warthog, hyena, hippo and 15 different antelope species. Early morning and afternoon game drives and bush walks introduce you to the fascinating world of animal inter-dependence and hierarchy.
AmaKhosi Safari Lodge has also become famous for its unique frogging safaris which take place after dark from November to March. The wetlands area of AmaZulu in particular, offers spectacular birding with over 400 recorded species including some exciting breeding pairs of both the Crowned eagle and the Stephanoaetus coronatus.
The newest addition is the elegant Amakhosi River Spa. Here you can indulge your senses, by soaking up panoramic views of the Mkuze river whilst enjoying the skilled hands of our trained massage therapists. Finish off with a refreshing swim in our new infinity pool.
Children are welcome at Amakhosi Safari Lodge either in the Isigodlo Villa or in the spacious River suites. Amakhosi doesn't recommend the adult drive for children under 7 years. AmaKhosi Safari Lodge offer baby sitting and a 'kiddies drive' outside of scheduled game drive times, which is shorter, and specifically designed for little ones to enjoy.
Six luxurious river suites capture nature through ceiling-high windows and private viewing decks across the river each with hammocks and outside showers. Each suite accommodates two adults with an air conditioned lounge, bedroom, bathroom with a bath for two, separate shower
