Belém is located about eight kilometres west of the old town of Lisbon. During the golden heyday of Portuguese seafaring, Belém was often the last part of Lisbon that sailors saw as they sailed over the horizon. One of the most famous landmarks of the city is the Torre de Belém. The imposing structure was once built to protect the city and is now a popular tourist attraction.
