Batalha is an atmospheric historic town in the Centro Region of Portugal, situated within the Leiria District. The town’s crowning landmark is its enormous Gothic, UNESCO-listed Santa Maria da Vitoria Monastery. The structure was built as an homage to the Virgin Mary after the king had victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota, in 1385. This magnificent monument draws visitors with a range of interests, as it holds significance in religion, warfare, and architecture. It is of particular significance to Portuguese architecture, showing a transition to Gothic to Manueline style, and it was never finished but influenced the character of many other buildings.
