Sustainability is a key word in the philosophy of Laluka. We are inspired by the surroundings and we designed Laluka to be a sustainable element of the complex ecosystem that is the African bush. Live in harmony with nature is our goal and we are seeking to reduce our operating footprint wherever practical.
For this reason, we founded Laluka Farm, a sustainable project with the aim of supporting the lodge activity: the farm is located just across the road and is part of the reserve.
Every morning, we milk our cows and let them graze on the farm where they enjoy fresh grass and freedom.
The farm therefore supplies the lodge with daily fresh creamy milk and with the rest of the milk we make our own yoghurt, different types of cheese and our homemade butter. From chives to rosemary butter and, for the ones who prefer to stay classic, normal salted butter.
We do not only have cow milk, with the arrival of new sheep, we started milking them as well as we produce delicious fresh ricotta cheese.
Part of our mission is to make the surrounding communities aware of sustainability an be achieved and that Laluka is ready to pursue this goal. When the renovation works at the lodge started, we realized we had a lot of good quality wood left from the old buildings and we didn't want to waste it.
With a little bit of thinking and planning, was decided to build a nice and cosy chicken coop to keep our chickens warm and safe from the predators that populate the farm (civets, wild cats, genets and jackals).
We started with 17 chickens during the winter months and we expanded to be able to supply the surrounding communities as well. We now have 218 chickens and we produce on average 200 eggs per day. We feed our chickens with vegetable leftovers and maize.
Producing our own milk and eggs has been a great achievement, but our biggest accomplishment has been setting up two greenhouse tunnels that are supplying Laluka with fresh organic vegetables and fruits.
No pesticides or chemical products are used in the tunnels, the irrigation comes from our borehole water and we use our own compost to nourish the ground.
PARTICIPATE IN COLLECTING FARM PRODUCE FROM FARM TO PLATE
We would like to invite all of our guests to visit and experience the farm, walk through the fresh smell of our lavender, taste some of the our varieties of tomatoes and why not milk our cows and be rewarded with a delicious creamy glass of milk.
Guests can participate in collecting farm produce on the day which will be used for lunch and dinner, thus from farm to place same day!
