Early morning, you will be transferred in about 30 minutes to the Ollantaytambo train station where you will take your Vistadome train for about an hour to the Km 104 (7,220 ft - 2,200 m.a.s.l.), the starting point of your hike. First, pass by the ruins of Chachabamba and start hiking up for about four hours, during which you will have an amazing view over the Urubamba Valley before reaching the well-preserved ruins of Wiñaywayna (8,860 ft - 2,700 m.a.s.l.), the most significant citadel along the trail after Machu Picchu. There enjoy lunch, rest for a bit and then keep hiking through the best preserved section of the Inca Trail, entering through a humid cloud forest, full of native flora and fauna. After about two hours, you will reach the Sun Gate (8,990 ft - 2,740 m.a.s.l.) where you will get a bird’s eye view of your final destination: the magical Machupicchu citadel (7,980 ft - 2,432 m.a.s.l.). Get your first stories about the site and take a few pictures before boarding the bus down for about 20 minutes to Aguas Calientes (6,695 ft - 2,040 m.a.s.l.) only if you're staying down in the village.
