Situated near the great mountain of Asungate in Peru’s popular Cusco region, the strikingly colourful Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain reaches 5200 m in height and presents a natural kaleidoscopic colour palette unlike anything else on Earth. Also known as the ‘Mountain of 7 Colours’, this impressive geological formation was unsurprisingly ranked by National Geographic as one of the top 100 places to visit before you die. The mountains are hidden in a remote part of the Peruvian Andes and can only be reached by a long day trip from Cusco or as part of the Ausangate trek. Those who make the effort to reach the mountains will be richly rewarded with excellent hiking trails, spectacular natural scenery and the opportunity to interact with local villagers, most of whom continue to live traditional lives as alpaca herders and farmers.
