Situated 40 kilometres west of Nizwa in the Ad Dakhiliyah region of Oman, the small town of Bahla is best known for its massive UNESCO-listed fort, built in the 13 century, it is considered the oldest fort in Oman. Dubbed ‘Madinat al-Sehr’, which means ‘city of magic’, the town is known for its many myths and legends of ancient magic. It is one of Oman’s oldest oasis towns and once served as the capital of the sultan­ate. Visitors can look forward to exploring the atmospheric old town and city walls, which stretch for 12 kilometres encompassing Bahla town; browsing the vibrant little souk and discovering the unique locally-made earthenware pottery. Located just outside of Bahla is the 17th-century Castle of Jabreen, don’t miss the opportunity to view this fine example of Islamic architecture featuring paintings and beautiful wooden inscriptions.
