The Miho Museum is situated near the town of Shigaraki on the Japanese island of Honchu and was named for its founder, Koyama Mihoki, one of the richest women in Japan. The uniquely designed building is surrounded by forest and a large part of it was carved out of the mountaintop on which it stands.
The collection consists of more than two thousand pieces with around 250 items on display at any given time. The majority of the items come from Koyama Mihoki’s private collection and include items from various Asian cultures as well as works from the ancient Egyptian and Roman civilisations.
