Managua, Nicaragua's charming capital city, enjoys a wonderful location on the southern shore of Lake Managua. Although Managua is the main entry point for most travellers to Nicaragua, few travellers linger in the capital city, heading for the country's less urban attractions instead. But those who spend a few days here will find pockets of culture and creativity, making it well worth their while. Stop by a roadside restaurant for the national staple, a cheesy Quesillo, sample the local beer at a quaint salsa bar, swim in the Laguna de Apoyo, a freshwater volcanic crater lake, or trawl the eclectic bus station market, Mercado Roberto Huembes, for souvenirs.
