High in the mountains where Costa Rica’s continental divide splits the country in two like a bony spine, you don’t need to look up to see clouds – they are all around you.
At nearly a mile above sea level, the lush tropical rainforests of Monteverde are perennially shrouded in visible water vapor, a misty fog consisting of ground-level clouds that has given rise to the term “cloud forest.”
In the middle of this magical destination sits Monteverde Lodge and Gardens. Offering 28 sumptuously appointed guestrooms and a secluded swimming pool, it’s within walking distance of Monteverde’s main town, Santa Elena. But it feels like it’s in another world.
Monteverde Lodge is framed by designer gardens and a private reserve teeming with wildlife, beckoning you to explore its trails. Our expert naturalist guides will show you the secret spots in Monteverde’s mysterious forests, inviting you to view exotic birds, slumbering sloths and delicate orchids.
Our new and highest room category at Monteverde Lodge and Gardens, designed to take your stay to the next level.

The mission 15 years ago when the project began was to bring the Cloud Forest and it's creatures to our doorstep. We are happy to say that we have succeeded. The gardens have some truly special plants such as Tree Ferns, Imperial Bromeliads and Anthuriums. There are also many species of orchids, white and purple Agapanthus, Hydrangeas and much more. In the beginning, we rarely saw mammals on the grounds, but today it's common to see White-nose Coatis, Agoutis, and White-faced Capuchin monkeys. About once a year the White-faced Monkeys even manage to visit El Jardin restaurant. But you have a much better chance to see them in the garden. See photo at right. Birds love the grounds surrounding Monteverde Lodge. We often see the Three-Wattled Bellbird, the Masked Tityra and the Emerald Toucanet, among others. The songs of the Rufous-and-White Wren usually accompany your time in the gardens.

If observation of the rainforest has taught us anything, it’s to enjoy the contrasts: the heat and the cold, the constant renewal and the perfection of the hundred-year-old tree. With that daring and dynamic spirit, Chef George Belesis approached the creation of one of his masterpieces: the Monteverde Lodge menu.
This transformative spirit quickly distinguished us as the premier restaurant in this popular Costa Rican tourism region. Without pretentious dishes, but with masterly use of local ingredients and a reimagining of the country’s culinary traditions, Belesis created a repertory of marvels that speak to our innermost selves in the universal language of pleasure, exquisite flavor and a love of excellence.
Some of our signature dishes include a shrimp tostada appetizer – grilled jumbo shrimp on a crispy corn tortilla with cherry tomatoes and avocado mousse. A perfectly cooked beef tenderloin, in a unique sauce made of local blackberries and coffee, plus a creamy potato puree with truffles, asparagus and beetroot. A black risotto -shrimp broth, squid ink, served with grilled octopus, shrimps & calamari or a fresh fillet of mackerel , deconstructed Russian salad and beetroot textures. Finally an exquisite lava cake made of bitter chocolate, salted Rum-caramel, caramelized banana and vanilla ice cream.
The conversion of one of our gardens into a greenhouse provides an unequalled atmosphere for a unique gastronomic experience.
