The Wat Phra Kaew temple is one of the oldest and most revered in the city of Chiang Rai. The temple was originally named Wat Pa Yah, meaning the Temple in the golden Bamboo Forest but was changed after the temple’s chedi was struck by lightning in 1434 revealing a Buddha image made of green jade which became known as the Emerald Buddha. (Emerald in this context simply means ‘green coloured’ in Thai). The temple was re-named to Wat Phra Kaew and the highly revered image has since been moved to a temple with the same name on the grounds of the Grand Palace in Bangkok. A copy that closely resembles the original was made and installed in the temple in Chiang Rai in 1991.
