Peninsula, Kumano Hayatama Taisha is one of the three important shrines of Kumano. It holds a significant place in Japanese mythology along with two other shrines, Hongu Taisha, and Nachi Taisha.
Hayatama Taisha has occupied the same spot on the Kumano Riverbank since at least the 12th century, and there is a sacred rock not far from the shrine which is believed to be the one where three Shinto deities descended to earth. Inside the shrine compound, there is an ancient tree which is also considered to be sacred, and the Hayatama Taisha Treasure Hall displays an impressive collection of over a dozen national treasures that include offerings brought by pilgrims. The shrine can be reached via a 15-minute walk from JR Shingu Station.
