Set on ​​the Großer Burgberg near Bad Harzburg, Burgruine Harzburg is a medieval castle built by King Heinrich IV in 1065-1068 that served to protect the Reichsbannforst and the Imperial Palace in Goslar. The property comprised a royal residence, a collegiate church and a royal burial place on the castle grounds. The complex was one of the largest, most modern and well-fortified castles of its time. Today, visitors can explore some of the restored spaces, including the "powder tower", the castle fountain, and the remains of the castle walls.
