Castel Gandolfo is a town situated on Lake Albano's edge, in the Alban Hills just south of Rome. Within the quaint town lies the Papal Palace of Castel Gandolfo, which served as a summer residence and vacation retreat for the pope. Today, visitors can enjoy guided tours through the palace and its picturesque gardens. The town is also home to several archaeological places, including the Emissario del Lago Albano and the ancient villa of Emperor Domitian. There are also many artistic interest points, such as San Tommaso di Villanova's parish church, which Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed. The main square, Piazza della Liberta, is dotted with cafés and shops selling souvenirs and local products. Visitors can also head to the lake and find several restaurants, bars and beach clubs. Surrounding the lake are several places offering boat, pedal, kayak hire, and bicycle rentals to explore the surrounding areas.
