Standing proudly in a forest-like setting of giant riverine trees on the banks of the famed Sand River, Rattray’s Lodge offers genuine seclusion. All eight of the grand award-winning freestanding “villas” overlook the lush floodplains and the river beyond. It forms part of the 13 500ha MalaMala Game Reserve.
Guests can choose to pass their time on thrilling game drives, informative nature walks, birdwatching and star-gazing in the company of a professional guide. Twice-daily drives are deliberately unhurried and limited to four or less guests per vehicle. This ensures an intimate journey around an area renowned for its concentrated levels of spectacular sightings and natural splendour.
From your spacious riverside deck, your safari begins and continues whilst chilling in your private plunge pool, or freshening up in the outdoor shower. Treat yourself to a gym workout or an indulgent pamper by a skilled masseuse, either in-room, on the deck, or the spa treatment rooms adjacent to the pool.

Each suite functions as an inclusive villa of 128 square metres, resplendent with hand-selected furnishings, lavish his-and-hers bathrooms, a secluded outdoor shower and a private plunge pool.

Our guides read the bush in real time. Tracks in the sand, alarm calls from the trees, birds gathering to circle above a kill. Every detail adds context to the story unfolding around you. Game drives are conducted twice a day (early morning, and late afternoon/ evening) in open 4-wheel drive safari vehicles. The 4-wheel drive safari vehicles enable the rangers to leave the road and provide guests with close up game viewing and fantastic photographic opportunities.
Visitors may head out on foot with their armed ranger. The perspective of the bush is entirely different to that of a vehicle, and guests will learn to read the signs of the wild, and perhaps come into close contact with the different animal species on the reserve.
Spa treatments may be taken in the spa facility, in the suites or on the outdoor deck in the suites.
There is a gym located next door to the spa, overlooking the swimming pool and the Sand River. The gym has a selection of cardio equipment and free weights.
Enjoy your meals whilst overlooking the life-giving Sand River. All meals are creatively prepared with a mix of local and international favourites on the menu. The Rattray's cellar has an impressive selection of sought-after wines set the tone for superb dining experience.
The historic bar in the guest area is an ideal spot for pre-dinner drinks and meals are served in the location of your choice, either in the privacy of your own home-from-home, on the enormous deck of the master lodge or around the fire in the reed ‘boma’.
