One of the biggest and most diverse national parks in Costa Rica, Braulio Carrillo National Park is found on the lush and fertile Central Volcanic Range, covered by rolling hills and exuberant vegetation, an easy day trip from San Jose. Among the park's dense forests and canyons, waterfalls are several rivers, waterfalls, and streams, a pristine landscape explored through several challenging hikes. For the more easygoing traveller, a tram ride that ascends to an elevation of 170 metres is recommended to take in the sublime view of the tropical rainforest. The park is home to more than 500 species of birds, 6000 species of trees and plants, and over 135 species of animals, including the magnificent Quetzal, toucans, guans, eagles, jaguars, tapirs, monkeys and South America's largest venomous snake, the Bushmaster.
