Solitaire is an iconic settlement in the Khomas Region, situated at a vital crossroads in the central Namib Desert. The site was established in 1948 by Willem Christoffel van Coller, who originally purchased the land for Karakul sheep farming. His wife, Elsie Sophia, chose the name "Solitaire," which perfectly captures the essence of the location: referring both to a single diamond and to the profound solitude of this remote outpost.

Today, Solitaire serves as an essential oasis for travellers heading towards the ancient dunes of Sossusvlei. It marks a critical stop for refuelling and stocking up on necessities before venturing further into the wilderness. While the collection of vintage, rusted car wrecks provides a signature photographic backdrop, the settlement is most famous for its bakery. Renowned for serving the best apple pie in Namibia, the bakery also offers various savoury options, making the local café and bar a celebrated rest stop in the heart of the desert.
