The 52m high Padrão dos Descobrimentos was erected in 1960. The concrete monument, in the shape of a ship's prow, was built to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator. There is an interesting map near the monument showing the routes opened up by the Portuguese explorers.
