Torre de Belém is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the shores of the Taus River in Lisbon. Built between 1514 and 1519 the fortification acted as a point of embarkation and disembarkation for Portuguese explorers and as a ceremonial gateway to the city. The structure was built from lioz limestone and consists of a bastion and a 30-metre/four-storey tower. Today the structure and its location are popular tourist locations.
