One of the oldest districts in Lisbon, Alfama has a historic reputation as a squalid neighborhood of sailors and dock workers. Over the years the area has since shed this unflattering characterization and morphed into a charming artisan district. Visitors can wander through the labyrinth of narrow streets and stop by notable landmarks including the ancient castle of Lisbon, Portas do Sol viewpoint, the National Pantheon and Saint Anthony’s Church. Visitors to the area can also enjoy the historic castle Castelo de Sao Jorge and also take time to visit the Lisbon Cathedral.
