Built by the Moors in the mid-11th century, Castelo Sao de Jorge is set on a hilltop and overlooks the historic centre city of Lisbon. This former palace was the residence of Dom Afonso Henriques who conquered Lisbon on October 25th, 1147 and became the first king of Portugal. For centuries, the castle has hosted famous figures, festivities and coronations during the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. Today the castle is open for guided tours where visitors can see theatre performances, exhibitions, and view the ruins of this former royal palace.
