Construction on the historic Buddhist temple, Wat Xieng Thong, began in 1559 with a number of repairs and features added over the centuries. The temple is located on the banks of the Mekong River, in Luang Prabang, an area renowned for its elaborate temples. Wat Xieng Thong is particularly celebrated for hosting the coronations of the country’s monarchs.

The temple houses the Tripitaka library, a drum tower, magnificent artworks, the royal funerary carriage house and various urns of the royal family, the Sanctuary of the Reclining Buddha, and more than twenty various structures/shrines. There is also a tranquil garden available to the public.
