The Basilica of the Annunciation is a church in Nazareth which was built over the cave that, according to Christian tradition, was the home of the Virgin Mary and the site where the angel Gabriel told her that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus. The lower level of the current church, constructed in 1969, contains the Grotto of the Annunciation along with remnants of churches from the Crusader and Byzantine eras. The limestone façade bears reliefs of Mary, the angel Gabriel, and Matthew, mark, Luke, and John, the four evangelists. Above them is a bronze statue of Jesus. There is a statue depicting Mary, aged 14, at a door on the southern side of the church. This historically significant site is considered to be sacred within some circles of Christianity and attracts many Christian visitors every year.
