Dubbed the "City of Palms", Jericho is a small city spread out along the west side of the Jordan River within the Palestinian Territories and Israeli-occupied West Bank. A relatively tranquil town, Jericho's reputation for calm in the midst of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, have made it a natural target for visitors to the area. Thought to be over 10,000 years old, the city’s remarkably long history has resulted in a city brimming with historical and religious attractions. Nearby archaeological sites include the Old Testament site of Tell es-Sultan and a Neolithic tower which, when dated back to 8000-7000 BC, led many to believe that Jericho may indeed be the world’s oldest city. While this assertion remains contentious, there is no doubting that the abundance of wonderful freshwater springs in and around the city and the area’s gorgeous riverside setting has attracted human habitation for thousands of years. Today, the allure of this welcoming oasis in the desert remains as strong as ever.
