Resting in the fertile highlands of north Jordan, Ajloun is a hilly town which serves as the capital of the Ajloun Governorate, which is comprised of a group of 27 towns and villages spread out over an area of around 420 square kilometres. The town of Aljoun itself is founded on an ancient market town and is centred around a mosque believed to be about 800 years old. In addition to this historic mosque, the main tourist draw cards are the impressive hilltop ruins of the 12th-century Aljoun Castle and the on-site Aljoun Archeological Museum, showcasing a number of interesting Neolithic artifacts found in the region. Other not-to-be-missed attractions in the area include the biblical site of Mar Elias and the Ajloun Forest Reserve, one of Jordan’s best nature reserves which is home to a number of popular walking trails.
