Tivoli lies in the region of Lazio in west-central Italy. This ancient city – about 30 kilometres from Rome – offers travellers numerous historical sights, excellent cuisine and near-lying outdoor attractions. Begin at the UNESCO Heritage Sites of Villa Adriana, a retreat built for Roman Emperor Hadrian and used from the 2nd century (including ancient monuments such as the Piazza d’Oro and the Teatro Marittimo), and the 16th-century Villa d’Este (a retreat for Renaissance aristocrats) – with on-site palace, beautiful gardens and extravagant fountains. Other key sights include the Romanesque Tivoli Cathedral; the 15th-century medieval fortress, Rocco Pia; and Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, showcasing modernist sculptures and surrounded by beautiful architecture. Finally, enjoy popular restaurants like Ristorante Osteria la Briciola, walk to the Via delle Cascatelle waterfalls or hike in the nearby Riserva Naturale Monte Catillo.
