Calacoto is a district in the southern section of La Paz, roughly 15 minutes from the city centre. This vibrant neighbourhood is a hub of retail and foodie culture, with great shops, markets and restaurants. The archaeological site of Jach'a Phasa, in the north of Calacoto, encompasses over 50 mysterious stone towers, crafted from volcanic rock and enclosed by a wall of roughly hewn bricks and mortar. Roughly ten kilometres out of town, Moon Valley is named as such for its otherworldly landscapes, peppered with bizarre grey sandstone formations crafted by the elements over the aeons.
