Korakuen Garden is ranked as one of three of the best landscaped gardens in Japan and is one of the main attractions of Okayama.
The appearance of the garden has changed very little since its creation in 1687 during the Edo period when its construction was ordered as a place of leisure for the daimyo and his family, and also to entertain important guests. The public was occasionally allowed to enter the garden and in 1884 it was formally opened to the public when ownership was transferred to the Okayama Prefecture.
The garden was designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty in 1952 and is currently managed as a historical cultural asset to be preserved for future generations.
