About Hanchey Temple

Hanchey Temple consists of several temples which are placed at the top of a hill, north of the nearby provincial town of Kampong Cham.

The oldest temple on the premises is a brick sanctuary built in the 7th or 8th century during the time of the Chenla Empire.

It was dedicated to Hirahara, a Hindu god. Ancient Sanskrit inscriptions are found at this holy site. The Theravada pagoda dedicated to Lord Buddha stands behind the sanctuary.

A Khmer-style pagoda is also to be seen here. Many Buddhist statues adorn the shrine and the walls feature paintings telling the story of Buddhism.

Statues of people in traditional costumes, wild animals and fruits are also spread across the area.
