One of the largest and most famous public squares in the world, the Tiananmen Square was named after Tiananmen Gate or “Gate of Heavenly Peace”. The square has great historical significance and bore witness to several important events in China’s history. The Tiananmen Square consists of the Great Hall of the People, the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, the National Museum of China, and the Monument to the People's Heroes. Tiananmen Gate separates the square from the Forbidden City.
