The remote village of Mumbuca in the municipality of Mateiros is home to approximately 200 inhabitants and dates back to the 70s where two women escaped their oppressive families, started a new life and, in so doing, made a curious discovery. The village pathways were blanketed by tall grass that shone like gold. To make a living, the women made bags, baskets, belts, jewellery, and other artwork from the magnificent find in order to make a living. Today, Mambuca exclusively produces golden grass handicrafts that are exported globally.
