The Zambezi River is the 4th largest in Africa after the Nile, Zaire and Niger respectively. Its source is in North Western Zambia and flows approximately 2800km to its mouth in Mozambique into the warm Indian Ocean. It is a wide, attractive River dotted with islands and sandbanks and the stretch of River preceding the Falls is bordered on the Zimbabwean side by the Zambezi National Park.
Cruise boats vary in size and style but generally all offer comfortable seating in safari chairs, tables with attractive table cloths, bar service, snacks and have toilet facilities on board. Cruise boats have life jackets and rings and safety features are pointed out by the skipper. The cruises are shaded and gently make their way upstream towards the National Park, usually accompanied by a brief talk about the River and its wildlife by your skipper. The sizes and facilities of cruise boats do vary from company to company. Relax and enjoy the riverine vegetation one of which is the Mulala Palm - a tall attractive palm tree that produces a vegetable ivory fruit that grows to the size of a cricket ball. The birdlife is excellent while you cruise past hippo and occasionally crocodile. In the drier months, wildlife such as elephant and many antelope species can be seen grazing on the Riverbanks or swimming across to the smaller islands. Guests are collect ed from their hotels for a short drive to their respective jetties to depart on the cruise. The cruises last approximately 2 hours.
