The Door of No Return is a museum and memorial to the Atlantic slave trade on Goree Island. For many years, Goree island was a major slave-trading centre on the African coast. Captured slaves were imprisoned and spent days shackled to the floor with their backs against the walls before being sorted and shipped across the Atlantic. Many died at sea, but those who survived endured a life of hard labour on sugar, tobacco and cotton plantations. The museum is a 20-minute ferry ride from the city centre of Dakar, and guided tours of the house are available.
