Perched on a hilltop overlooking the town of Sintra, the Pena Palace is a Romanticist castle located in São Pedro de Penaferrim, in the Portuguese Riviera. Built in the Middle Ages as a chapel, then subsequently a monastery, it was reduced to rubble by a major earthquake in 1755. The site was reconstructed as a palace for the Portuguese royal family and has hosted countless dignitaries including the President of Portugal. It is one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal and is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
