Ifaty is located on the coast of southwestern Madagascar and is the gateway to the region’s Spiny Forest, located some 20 kilometres from the town and recognised as one of the world’s most exceptional - and threatened - ecosystems. These ancient woodlands have adapted to the area’s arid conditions over hundreds of years and consist of predominantly spiky trees that need minimal moisture and can store water over time. Commonly occurring species include centuries-old baobabs - dubbed ‘upside down trees’ for their root-like branches - and bizarre-looking octopus trees with spiked wavy limbs. The forest is a superb bird-watching spot home to rare and endangered species such as the long-tailed ground roller and the sub-desert mesite. Back on the coast, Ifaty is known for its excellent offshore surf breaks, deep sea fishing, whale watching and great snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities.
