Fondly known by locals as simply ‘Tucuman’, San Miguel de Tucuman is the capital city of the Tucuman Province, and the largest city in the Northwest region of Argentina. This bustling metropolis dates back as far as the early 1600s and features some impressive historical architecture including a neoclassical cathedral and the grand, art nouveau Government House, both of which can be found in the city’s central hub, the famous Independence Square. Other notable attractions include the Museo Casa Padilla, the former home of a prominent local family, and the Museo Casa Histórica de la Independencia, which commemorates Argentina's emancipation from Spanish rule in 1816. Travellers looking for more adventurous activities can head to the hills in the west of town where you will find some world-class paragliding and hang gliding opportunities.
