Instituto Baleia Jubarte (The Humpback Whale Institute) aims to provide institutional support to the Humpback Whale Project, as well as develop other projects and programmes aimed at research, marine conservation and the promotion of sustainable development. The institute is a civil society non-profit organisation under private law, which was created in 1996, and is headquartered in Caravelas, Bahia. According to its Bylaws, the IBJ aims to promote the defence, preservation and conservation of the environment and actions that encourage sustainable development, especially in works aimed at the protection and scientific research of humpback whales and other cetaceans such as the grey dolphin and the porpoise, monitoring areas through service contracts, and participation in campaigns for the creation, implementation and expansion of Marine Protected Areas in Brazilian waters.
