Togetsukyo Bridge is the iconic wooden bridge that spans the Katsura River in Arashiyama. Its name means “Moon Crossing Bridge”, reflecting the poetic atmosphere long associated with this scenic part of western Kyoto.

The current structure dates from the 1930s, although a bridge has stood here for over a thousand years. From the centre of the bridge, there are open views of the river and the surrounding forested hills, which change beautifully with the seasons.

In spring, cherry blossoms frame the riverbanks, while autumn brings vibrant red and gold foliage to the mountains behind. During summer, boats drift along the river, adding movement to the landscape. The area feels particularly calm in the early morning before larger visitor numbers arrive.

Togetsukyo serves as a focal point within Arashiyama and is surrounded by small shops, cafés and walking paths along the river.

Visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon for softer light and fewer crowds. Midday can feel busy, especially during peak travel seasons.

Allow time for a short riverside walk on either bank of the Katsura River. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended if exploring further into Arashiyama.
