Built in the baroque style of the late 1600's, the Church of San Francisco is well preserved, featuring gilded side altars and a lattice dome. The adjoining monastery has an impressive collection of ancient religious texts. The catacombs built under the church, were originally part of Lima's cemeteries. An estimated 75000 bodies are buried under San Francisco, and many of the remains are exposed, stacked in strange patterns in circular stone pits.
