The giant Chachani is situated in southern Peru, near Arequipa. The highest of the mountains near the city, this sacred peak has a name meaning ‘skirt’ and is believed to have the power to determine the gender of unborn children. The summit was once the site of Capacocha sacrifices, and several archaeological relics have been found, dating back to pre-Hispanic times. The rock has been used to construct churches in the nearby towns. A popular two-day trek allows nature enthusiasts to discover the mountain’s incredible wilderness. The massif is formed from between six and eight volcanic craters, with only one really remaining recognisable as such. Towards the back of Chachani, the national reserve of Aguada Blanca and Salinas offers the chance to spot Andean foxes, condors, deer, and many other native animals.
