Puente de los Suspiros was constructed in 1876 and is located in Lima's Barranco District. The bridge is a 19th-century wooden structure erected over a gully between Ayacucho Street and the Church of the Hermitage. In the mid-1900s Peruvian writers and poets were drawn to the bridge for artistic contemplation and inspiration, and so too were romantic couples, giving the bridge its second name "The Bridge of Sighs".
