Walpa Gorge is part of Kata Tjuta, a sacred men’s site belonging to the Anangu people. Walpa is an Aboriginal word that means whistling wind, and the gorge was named so for the gentle, refreshing breezes that pass through it, creating a cool refuge for vegetation and wildlife.
Visitors can take a comfortable 2.6 km long walk, lasting about an hour, along a gentle track that leads between two of the tallest domes. The trail will take them past rare plants to a grove with Spearwood trees and a viewing platform where they can stop and take in the beautiful landscape while listening to the melody of the winds. Walkers are advised to ensure that they wear sturdy shoes and take along a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of drinking water.
