Litchfield National Park is located 100km southwest of Darwin and comprises 1500 square kilometres of diverse unspoilt landscapes, including rainforests, fields of magnetic termite mounds, cycad forests and streams. Waterfalls and springs are found in abundance here, but Wango, Florence, Tjaynera, Surprise Creek and Tolmer Falls are the most popular – and spectacular – sites. There are numerous hiking trails dotted with fantastical rock formations, with some leading to crystal-clear waterholes and lovely swimming spots. The Lost City, in the western section of the park, is a striking collection of imposing sandstone columns, and is definitely worth a visit.
